Laurence V. Burton oral history, 1964.

In this interview, Laurence V. Burton discusses his personal history and observations of the canning industry. Topics include: his childhood and student experiences; observations of operations at Libby McNeill and Libby from approximately 1916 until 1924, including an experiment with food dehydration in New York State and an attempt to grow and process swiss chard; importance of enzyme destruction to food processing; impressions of competitiveness and cooperation among food processors; influence of H.J. Heinz on the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906; development of the Heinz blotter test for catchup and the technical reasons for the good quality of Heinz catchup; experiences with the United States Army during World War II; and experiences as quality inspector for the National Canners Association.
